NIST CSF Identify Function Assessment

Identify is the function the rest of the NIST Cybersecurity Framework stands on: you can't protect, detect, or recover what you haven't inventoried, prioritized, and assigned an owner. This page looks at Identify as an advisory lens — what it actually asks of an organization, and how a structured alignment assessment surfaces the gaps it's designed to catch.

What the Identify Function Actually Covers

In the NIST CSF, Identify groups the outcomes that establish organizational understanding: asset management (knowing what hardware, software, systems, and data you have), business environment (knowing which of those assets the business actually depends on), governance (knowing who is accountable and what policies apply), risk assessment (knowing where the exposure is), and risk management strategy (knowing how the organization has decided to handle that exposure).

None of that is a product you can buy, which is why Identify is the function organizations most often skip past. Firewalls and endpoint agents feel like progress; an asset inventory and a documented owner for risk decisions feel like paperwork. But every other function inherits Identify's blind spots — an unmanaged server is one no tool is protecting and no plan is recovering.

Why Identify Comes First

Protect, Detect, Respond, and Recover all operate on a defined scope. When that scope is wrong, the downstream functions fail quietly: backup coverage that misses the file share everyone actually uses, monitoring that watches servers but not the SaaS platform holding customer data, an incident plan that lists a system administrator who left last year. These aren't tooling failures — they're Identify failures that show up downstream.

That's what makes Identify the highest-leverage place to start an advisory conversation. A review that begins with "what do you have, what matters most, and who owns the decisions" routinely surfaces more actionable findings than a review that begins with security products.

How LineaScore's Domains Map to Identify

LineaScore's standard assessment covers 68 areas across four domains — Infrastructure, Cybersecurity, Operations, and Governance — and the Identify themes run through two of them in particular. The Infrastructure domain works through the asset-understanding questions: server and workstation health and lifecycle, network and wireless infrastructure, DNS and domain ownership, licensing, cloud storage, and where critical data actually lives. The Governance domain covers the accountability side: documentation, vendor management, IT budgeting and planning, policy, and insurance coverage against actual risk exposure.

Each area is rated on a four-level scale — S4 Strong, S3 Adequate, S2 Limited, S1 Priority — with your findings and recommendations captured per item. Areas that don't apply can be marked out of scope and are excluded from the scoring math, so the result reflects the environment that was actually reviewed. For teams that want the review organized around the framework itself, Pro adds a NIST CSF Aligned template alongside the standard assessment.

From Identify Gaps to a Scored Conversation

The output is a scored, client-ready report: an overall alignment ring, domain-level bars, strengths and priority areas in facing columns sorted worst-first, and a per-item findings table. Identify-type gaps — unknown asset ownership, undocumented environments, no continuity planning — tend to land in the priority column, which gives the advisory conversation its starting point and turns "you should have an inventory" into a scored finding with a recommendation attached.

One framing note: LineaScore is an advisory alignment tool. A NIST CSF aligned review organizes professional judgment around the framework's structure — it is not a certification, an audit, or a formal compliance determination, and the CSF itself is a voluntary framework, not a standard you pass or fail.
