Before the Review: Setting Expectations

The most effective technology alignment reviews begin with a brief scoping conversation. Before opening the assessment tool, an experienced MSP clarifies a few things with the client:

  • What does the client's environment include? (Cloud-only, hybrid, on-premises servers, remote workforce?)
  • Are there any areas that are clearly out of scope? (A medical practice without a physical server, for instance, doesn't need infrastructure items scored for server room conditions.)
  • Who is the intended audience for the report? (The owner only? A board? An insurance underwriter?)

This conversation takes 5–10 minutes and ensures the assessment produces relevant results rather than a generic report with a dozen N/A items that undercut its credibility.

During the Assessment: Structured Scoring

LineaScore walks the assessor through 68 areas organized across four domains. For each area, the assessor selects one of four scores based on their professional judgment about the client's current state:

  • Strong (4) — Well-implemented and appropriate
  • Adequate (3) — Present but with room for improvement
  • Weak (2) — Gaps exist that pose risk
  • High Risk (1) — Critical deficiency requiring immediate attention

Notes can be captured inline for any area. The assessment can be completed in a single session of roughly 45–60 minutes, or split across a walkthrough and a documentation phase if needed.

After Scoring: Reviewing Before Presenting

Before presenting findings to a client, experienced MSPs review the scorecard for anything that needs framing. A High Risk item in endpoint protection is different from a High Risk item in backup integrity — one is a process gap, one is a potential existential threat to the business. The report presents both equally; the assessor provides the context.

LineaScore's report is designed to support this conversation — section-level scores give an immediate orientation, and individual area scores support the detail as needed. Assessors typically highlight 3–5 priorities rather than walking through every item.

Presenting and Following Up

The client-ready report produced by LineaScore is the deliverable. MSPs share it during the review meeting (often screen-sharing the report directly) or export and send it as a follow-up. The report serves as a reference for the next engagement — and for quarterly reviews, the previous assessment becomes the baseline against which progress is measured.

Building quarterly reviews into the service agreement, with a documented improvement trajectory, is one of the most effective ways MSPs differentiate their relationship from a commodity support contract.

Framework-Aligned Reviews for Regulated Clients

For clients in healthcare or organizations referencing NIST cybersecurity guidance, LineaScore Pro includes HIPAA-aligned and NIST CSF-aligned templates. These provide a structured view of alignment relative to those frameworks — a useful addition to the standard technology alignment review for clients where framework alignment is a business requirement.
